Three McCrory Hair clients in the Manchester salon: copper curly hair, plum ombre waves and a blonde textured shag with fringe

Booking a new hairdresser in Manchester is a leap of faith. You are handing over your hair and a chunk of your time to someone you have never sat with before, and it is fair to want to know how it will go before you get there. This guide walks you through your first visit to McCrory Hair on Oxford Road, from the moment you book to the moment you leave with a blow dry and a plan.

Every one of our first-time clients gets the same care regardless of what they have come in for. Whether you are booking a precision cut, a colour appointment, a curl consultation, or something more ambitious, the shape of the day is the same. We hope this piece takes the guesswork out of it.

Before you arrive

When you book with us, whether that is online or by phone, we will confirm the service you have chosen and ask a few quick questions about your hair. This is not a form for the sake of a form. It helps us match you to the right stylist and set aside enough time to do the job properly, and it flags anything we need to prepare for in advance.

If you are having colour with us for the first time, we will book a patch test 48 hours before your appointment. This is a small test on the skin, and it is standard practice at any responsible Manchester salon. It exists to protect you, and we do it whether or not you have had colour elsewhere.

Good to know before you book. If you have used box dye, home henna, or had colour at another salon in the last twelve months, mention it when you book. It changes nothing about our welcome, but it may change what your first appointment looks like, and we would rather plan for it than discover it on the day.

We will send a reminder ahead of the appointment with the address, the arrival time, and a note about the nearest parking and public transport options. Oxford Road is easy to reach by bus, tram, or train, and we are a short walk from the universities.

When you arrive

The salon sits on Oxford Road in the heart of Manchester. When you walk in, you will be greeted by name, offered somewhere to hang your coat, and asked what you would like to drink. Tea, coffee, or something cold, whichever suits.

Your stylist will come and collect you when they are ready. We build a small buffer into every first-time booking so that you never feel rushed on your way in, and so that the stylist has room to actually listen to you before scissors or brushes come out. If you are early, you are welcome to sit and settle in with your drink. If you are running late, please give us a call so we can plan around it.

The consultation

This is where we differ from a lot of Manchester salons. Every first-time visit with us starts with a proper in-person consultation, whatever the service. That means a conversation, not a form. Your stylist will ask about your hair history, how you wear it day-to-day, what you love and what you dislike, and what you actually want from the appointment. They will run their fingers through your hair to feel the condition and the texture. They will look at how it grows.

The McCrory difference. We treat the consultation as the most important part of your appointment, not a formality before we reach for the scissors. That is where the plan is made, and where honest advice replaces guesswork. It also means we would rather tell you at the start of the day that something is not going to work than push through and disappoint you.

If the consultation reveals something we did not expect, for example old colour that needs more careful work, a cut that would benefit from being split across two visits, or a curl type that needs a specialist, we will tell you then and there. Sometimes we will suggest tweaking the plan. Occasionally we will suggest rebooking with the right specialist on the team. What we will not do is press ahead and hope for the best.

You can meet the full team, including our Creative Director Alison Bell and Senior Stylist Kalaya Steadman, on the Meet the Team page.

The service itself

Once the plan is agreed, the appointment moves at the pace your hair needs. A precision cut, a full head of colour, a curly hair appointment, and a colour correction all take different amounts of time. What is consistent is the standard. We do not rush a cut, and we do not rush a colour.

You will be offered another drink during the appointment, and you are welcome to read, work on your phone, or simply enjoy the quiet. If you want to chat, the team is happy to chat. If you would rather have a peaceful hour, that is fine too. We take our cue from you.

If your appointment includes colour, we build in bond-building support as a matter of course, so the lightening process is as kind to your hair as it can be. If your appointment is a curly hair service, we cut dry so we can see exactly how each curl behaves before we shape it. If your appointment is a cut and blow dry, we will show you how to recreate the finish at home, using tools you actually own.

After the service

At the end of your appointment, we will talk you through what to expect from your hair over the coming weeks. How to wash and style it, what products will help, and when to think about your next visit. If you have had colour, we will explain the aftercare routine in detail. If you would like to read up before you leave, our guide to what actually changes balayage cost in Manchester is a useful primer for anyone considering colour with us. Current service prices are on the McCrory Hair price list.

Worth knowing. A good haircut or colour is a partnership. What we do in the chair sets you up, but how you look after your hair at home is what makes it last. We are always happy to answer follow-up questions between appointments, so if you are unsure about something at home, give us a call.

We will offer to rebook you before you leave, but there is no pressure. If you want time to think about it, that is entirely fine. When you are ready, you can book online or get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

How do I book my first appointment with a hairdresser at McCrory Hair?

You can book online through our website, or give the salon a call. When you book, tell us a little about your hair and what you are looking for. We will match you to the right stylist and set aside enough time to do the job properly. If you are not sure which service you need, book a consultation and we will help you decide from there.

How long does a first appointment usually take?

It depends on the service. A cut and blow dry is shorter than a full head of balayage, and a curl consultation and cut takes longer than a routine trim. What we build in for every first visit is a proper consultation, so please allow a little extra time on your first appointment.

What should I bring to my first visit at a Manchester hairdresser?

Nothing but yourself. Photos of hair you like are welcome and often help, though we will always adapt them to what will suit your face shape, hair type, and lifestyle. If you take any medication that could affect your hair or scalp, mention it during the consultation so we can factor it in.

Do I need a patch test before my first colour appointment?

Yes, if it is your first colour service with us or if you have had a reaction to colour before. We arrange the patch test 48 hours ahead of your appointment. It is a small test on the skin and takes moments. It is standard practice at any responsible Manchester salon.

Can I request a specific stylist as a new client?

Absolutely. If you have researched the team and want to book with a particular stylist, tell us when you book and we will make it happen if their diary allows. If you are not sure who to see, we will match you based on what you need. Read about the team here.

What if I do not like my hair on the day?

Talk to us. That is why the consultation matters so much, and why we check in during the appointment. We would far rather adjust something in the chair than have you leave unhappy. If you spot something in the days after that you would like tweaked, get in touch and we will book you back in.

Where is McCrory Hair based?

We are on Oxford Road in Manchester city centre, a short walk from the universities and easy to reach by bus, tram, or train. Clients travel to us from right across Greater Manchester for cutting, colour, and specialist curly and textured hair services.
